The SDES Black Hills Chapter invites you to join us for this special event to celebrate national Engineers Week. In 1951, the National Society of Professional Engineers founded EWeek to ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. In 2022, the week of February 20-26 is designated as Engineers Week across the nation.

Awards Presentation

Keynote Speaker:

Matt Hasvold, Black Hills Energy

Energy markets are incredibly complex; power markets in particular are especially opaque. Winter Storm Uri brought these markets into the spotlight for a brief moment in February 2021. Uri’s impact on the Texas grid (ERCOT), was headline news for several days. It provides a good starting point for understanding the priorities of utilities (reliability and economics), how electricity makes it to our homes, and how power markets operate during normal and exigent circumstances.

As an energy trader for Black Hills Energy, Matt Hasvold buys and sells power in the western US and dispatches the company’s power plants. He has Bachelor’s degrees in political science and economics from SDSU, a Juris Doctor from Creighton, and holds a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certificate.
